What Are Your Dental Health Goals?
When it comes to dental care as a McHenry Dentist, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Every patient is unique, so treatment plans vary from one person to the next. While one patient may be more casual about their dental health, another may be more inclined to take a proactive approach. When I sit down with a new patient for the first time, I always make a point to discuss their dental health goals. Knowing a patient’s goals helps me create a treatment plan that’s tailored to their individual concerns and needs.
Reasons for Visiting the Dentist
Whether they’re visiting the dentist for the first time in six months or the first time in six years, every patient has a reason for their appointment. While individual reasons may vary, they can generally be broken down into two different categories based on overall goals. A patient either has the goal of moving away from disease or moving towards health. Both are great reasons for visiting the dentist and can be addressed with preventative care and restorative treatment.
Preventative Vs. Restorative Dentistry
Preventative dental treatments are designed to prevent future dental health problems while restorative treatments focus on fixing existing issues. Once I have learned about a patient’s goals, I can make the decision whether their treatment plan should include preventative procedures, restorative treatment, or a combination of both.
Restorative Dental Procedures at Dr. James A. Hasken, DDS
Patients who have the goal of wanting to move away from disease are usually good candidates for restorative dental treatment. These patients tend to be more reactive. They may have recently become aware of a cavity and want it fixed. Or they have a cracked tooth that needs attention. Their treatment plan may involve restorative dental procedures such as:
● Dental fillings, crowns, or bridges
● Dental implants
● Root canal therapy
● Periodontal treatment
Preventative Dental Treatments in McHenry, IL
Patients who have the goal of wanting to move towards health are usually good candidates for preventative dental treatment. These patients tend to look at the bigger picture and want to know what can be done to prevent future problems. This requires gaining an understanding of their current condition and usually involves an examination of the teeth, gums, joints (TMJ), and chewing muscles. Their treatment plan may include preventative dental procedures such as:
● Dental Fitness exam
● Dental cleanings
● Fluoride treatment
● Dental sealants
