It’s Illinois Law – Mandatory School Dental Exams

There is a connection between children’s oral health and their overall performance in school. Regular visits to the dentist can help detect potential problems before they start affecting your child’s attendance and grades.

Numerous studies demonstrate the serious impact of poor oral health on academic performance. Research shows that students with toothaches are nearly four times more likely to maintain a low grade-point average. Only regular dental care and oral health education can help students avoid the systemic disease and compromised quality of life that dental disease creates.

Taking your children to the dentist has always been an important priority. But did you know that it’s also a law for Illinois residents? It’s true, the Illinois State Board of Education has mandated dental exams (Illinois Law: Child Health Examination Code, 77 Ill. Adm. Code 665) for kindergarten, second, sixth, and ninth grades, to ensure that students receive adequate oral health care. The dental examination must have taken place within 18 months prior to May 15 of the school year. A licenses dentist must complete the examination, sign, and date a Proof of School Dental Examination Form. At my McHenry, IL dental practice, we will gladly assist in ensuring you get the proper dental examination to meet the states Proof of School Dental Examination requirement.

Every parent wants the best for their child. When your child has a toothache or is due for a dental checkup, you want them to get the professional care they need to stay healthy. But with the rising cost of dental insurance, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for families to find affordable pediatric dental care.

The problem with many family dental insurance plans today is that they are extremely limited in terms of their coverage and benefits. Many fail to cover the cost of common dental procedures and require the family to pay a large out-of-pocket sum. Furthermore, providers that participate in PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans are often over-burdened with the number of patients they receive and try to rush them in and out of appointments. Often, families who visit these providers fail to get the proper care and attention they need.

The good news is, there are ways to obtain low-cost dental care for your child even if you don’t have insurance. An example is the Health-Focused Preventative Plan offered at my dental practice. Here’s the information for our in-house pediatric dental plan.

With wishes for good health,
