Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy allows teeth to be saved that have a decay that has reached the nerve of the tooth, infection from the root of the tooth (abscess), or inadequate tooth structure above the gum line to hold a restoration. A root canal is a procedure that involves removing the nerve tissue from the canal space inside of the of the tooth root, disinfecting the space and filling the space with a filling material only used in root canals. After completion of the root canal, in the vast majority of teeth, a full coverage restoration such as a crown is placed to provide maximum strength.
In many cases the root canal is completed in a single visit. The restoration is then completed at subsequent visits. When contemplating if a root canal is an option, consideration of the bone support, strength of the non – root portion of the tooth, and the functional load the tooth will be required to handle when functioning.
