Our Approach: Integrative Dental Medicine

Integrative or functional dental medicine is about identifying how the BODY, BREATHING, BACTERIA and BITE effects total health. This puts the patient at the center with a focus on prevention, fostering the development of healthy behaviors and skills for effective self control and care that can be used for a life time to attain optimum health. This focus is on developing health and maintaining a preventive focus rather that reacting to disease. The result can be a more predictable outcome.

Our integrative, functional approach is to look beyond the teeth and identify how your oral health can impact your total health and systemic health impact on oral health. We identify through questionnaires, health histories as well as a comprehensive oral examination process, key components and risk factors that impact systemic health. Research has taught us that inflammation is a key component in many chronic diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, strokes and diabetes. We can help provide strategies to help reduce systemic inflammation in your body through key oral hygiene techniques, diet, bacterial and salivary analysis when indicated.

The bite can be a window to specific health risks related to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This is a breathing disorder that can lead to increased risk of strokes, high blood pressure. OSA has some common signs such as snoring, acid reflux and teeth grinding. Not everyone has all symptoms. We partner closely with your medical doctor(s) through referral for assessment and sleep studies by the physician and we provide oral sleep appliances for those that are best suited or can’t tolerate CPAP therapy. We have seen some amazing results for our patients in the form of much better sleep, happier bed partners as the snoring stops as well as lowered blood pressure and quality of life improvements.

Dentistry is more than the teeth and gums. The mouth is a reflection of total body health. We look forward to helping you attain the level of total health that is important to you.
