CLOSE - Arestin

  1. Change gauze packing every half-hour for three hours. It is likely each time you change the gauze you will notice blood on it. This is normal. What you should not see is any active bleeding when you look at the extraction site itself. If you do, continue with the gauze packing every half-hour. If bleeding continues place a damp tea bag over the area of the extraction site and bite down on it for a half-hour. If you are concerned, call our office.
  2. Do not rinse vigorously until the following day. You may have things to drink but do not swish the fluid around in your mouth, this can dislodge the blood clot.
  3. The day after the extraction begin to rinse with warm salt water twice a day for two to three days. Use ½ to 1 teaspoon of salt water to 8 ounces of warm water. The water should be warm enough to dissolve the salt but not too hot that you could get burned.
  4. Wait until normal feeling has returned to your lips, tongue and cheeks before attempting to eat solid food or drink anything hot. Once the anesthetic is no longer working, you may eat what you want as long as you can control the position of the food in your mouth so that it doesn't enter the extraction site. Drink plenty of fluids. Children should be watched so they are not playing with their numb tongue, lips or cheeks as these could be injured.
  5. Keep your mouth clean. It is important to brush and floss your remaining teeth to avoid plaque building up in the area of the extraction, which could delay healing. Do not injure the extraction site itself with the toothbrush. Avoid the use of mouthwashes for two to three day after the extraction. The alcohol in these products will irritate the healing tissue. Keep your fingers and tongue away from the extraction site.
  6. If instructed by Dr. Hasken to use ice packs, place ice packs or cold towels on the side of the face where the extraction occurred for the first 4-6 hours after the extraction. Leave the ice packs in place for fifteen minutes then off for fifteen minutes. Keep repeating the process for the 4-6 hour period.
  7. 7If instructed by Dr. Hasken, the morning following surgery apply heat to the outside of your face on the side which the extraction took place. This should be warm moist heat; either a warm washcloth or a hot water bottle. Apply for fifteen minutes and then remove for fifteen minutes for three to four hours.
  8. Do not smoke or drink through a straw for 24 hours. Doing so could loosen the clot as it forms. Swelling and stiffness and in some cases bruising may occur. This is normal and should not cause alarm.
  9. Following dental surgery it is normal to experience some discomfort. If medication has been prescribed, take as instructed.
  10. If undue symptoms develop or your have a question or concern, please contact our office. If you have concern or problem regarding the extraction after regular office hours, call our emergency pager at (815)354-0112.
